He began with the M/V Viking which carried 100 passengers. Over the next 20 years, Viking Cruises grew (as did the vessels utilized) into a well known and respected tourism business on the Seacoast, while maintaining ferry service to Star Island. An ample freshwater spring enabled Appledore to be one of the most populated English settlements in the 1660s. But when the island became a township in 1680 and Massachusetts assessed taxes, its 40 families deconstructed their houses and rebuilt them on Star Island, just across the New Hampshire line. Most of the island is now owned by the Star Island Corporation, and the public is welcomed during daylight hours.

Visiting Smuttynose & Malaga There is no formal tour of Smuttynose which is a privately owned island. Visitors with their own boats are welcomed to tour responsibly following the rules posted in the harbor.

The island is also a migratory way station for more than 125 species of birds, and harbor seals, whales, porpoises, and dolphins frequent its waters. Smuttynose is still privately owned by descendants of Celia Thaxter, but they have protected with a conservation easement to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and they generously welcome respectful visitors. Captain Haley found four bars of silver under a flat stone and used the proceeds to build a breakwater connecting Smuttynose to little Malaga Island, creating Haley’s Cove. From there, walk south along the coast to find Miss Underhill’s Chair, a rocky perch from which a romantic young island schoolteacher was swept away by a great wave. Gosport Harbor is totally exposed to a good northwest blow, in which case, get out of the harbor and head for Portsmouth or go to sea.
All cruises are rain or shine, and cancellation is up to the discretion of the Captain. Cancellation is only considered if we feel that the conditions pose a danger to our passengers. Lightning does not pose a danger to passengers, and the ship is perfectly safe under those conditions. The M/V Thomas Laighton is a very stable ship, since we do travel out into the open ocean, waves do occur. The Captain and crew do their best to keep the boat on the calmest path.
Row ashore—if you dare—at Haley’s Cove and land at the little beach behind the breakwater. This is a lovely spot for a picnic, peaceful and secluded, and you can swim in clear water off the beach. The Haley cottage has been restored, and little Roz’s cottage is used as a base for camping groups.
While both vessels participated in contracted ferry runs, the Oceanic’s primary function was whale watching. The Thomas Laighton catered to sightseeing, party ships and private charters. The M/V Thomas Laighton is a 90-foot vessel with three decks- two fully heated and enclosed cabins and an open Sundeck with seating.
